450 Good-to-Great Games That You Can ONLY Play On Consoles

Probably no rivalry in video game history – not even Nintendo vs Sega – has been longer-running or more heated than consoles vs PCs. Back in the 90’s and into the early 00’s, the debate seemed relatively friendly, but in recent years it seems to have grown more vicious and mean-spirited, especially with the advent of the so-called “PC Master Race” and the dismissing of console players as “plebs.” Sure, it may have been intended to be lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek, but when one side starts calling itself a master race and referring to the other side as peasants, it’s hard to argue that it’s all in good fun. Whenever a console vs PC debate gets stirred up, PC gamers tend to fall back on the same arguments: “because better graphics,” “because mods,” “because Steam,” and “because mouse and keyboard” seem to be the most common ones, with much bandying-about of tech specs and talk of frames per second and 4K and resolution and things of that nature often leading the charge.

Well, we’re debating video game platforms, not televisions or stereo systems – shouldn’t the games themselves be the most important factor? And to that end, I feel – and have always felt – that consoles have significantly more exclusives that can’t be played on PC in any form than the other way around, and across a far wider variety of genres. Sure, PC has the best-looking versions of a lot of games, and the moddable versions of games, and in the cases of games like Team Fortress 2 and such, the most updated versions of games. But I would argue that having the best looking/most upgraded/most customizable versions of a few dozen games isn’t worth the trade off of the literally hundreds of games you just have to give up outright if you only play on PC. And since there doesn’t seem to exist any overall lists of console exclusives on the internet, I’ve decided to make one, and 450 seemed like a good number.

Now, I’d like to explain the list a little bit. First off, what constitutes a “good game” is obviously completely subjective. It would be impossible to come up with a list of games that everybody is going to universally accept as a list of good games. So the only fair way to do it was to look at Gamerankings.com and go by the aggregate review scores of the games. I considered any game that had a score above 70% as being a “good” game, but as you will see as you go through the list, the majority of games scored well above that minimum. I also only used games that had at least 20 reviews, as games that only have a handful of reviews can have severely skewed scores (and are typically disproportionately high). Secondly, I only included a single version of each game, so I wouldn’t count something like The Last of Us and The Last of Us Remastered as two separate games, for example. I just picked the highest-rated one and used that. Thirdly, I disqualified any game that also appeared on iOS or Android, as pretty much everyone has access to games that are on mobile so it seems disingenuous to trumpet a game you can easily grab on iPhone as a “console exclusive.” Lastly, in terms of multi-console games, I just picked the one that Gamerankings had listed as their lead review. It’s not important whether the PS3 or Xbox 360 version of the game is the one I listed, so long as there isn’t a PC version.

As we all know, internet-based information – especially about video games – can be sketchy. So there is a possibility that I am wrong on some of these, and that they have in fact been on PC in some form. By all means, let me know if you see a case of that. I want this list to be as accurate as possible and will gladly update it to keep it that way. And I will obviously update it if any of these games were to come to Steam or GoG or something later.

So what about the e-word? I really don’t think emulation should factor into this discussion. It’s true that modern PCs can emulate a lot of these games, but using that as an argument goes against the spirit of debates like this. If a group of people were debating which console was the best of all time, and someone said Xbox because he can play NES, SNES, and Genesis games on his, everyone would groan and roll their eyes. Because it’s a cop-out and it sucks the fun out of an otherwise enjoyable, spirited debate. Most people even agree that you shouldn’t use the PS2’s ability to play PS1 games in pro-PS2 arguments; it’s not unlike pointing to emulation in pro-PC arguments. This list is also meant to act as a comparison between the console games of the relevant eras and the PC games of said eras, sort of like debating SNES vs Genesis now should be viewing them in their original time, and not just saying “Who cares, I can play both on my iPhone anyway.” Lastly, a large number of these games are on consoles that aren’t currently emulated easily, and I feel that even just narrowing the list down to last and current gen and pitting it against the PC releases of the last decade still gives consoles a pretty solid win.

But enough of that; here is an official(ish) list that proves that there are literally hundreds and hundreds of console-exclusive games. Feel free to challenge me with a list of true PC exclusives if you feel confident that you can come up with an even remotely similar number. You can even count the 10 different expansions packs for each game as separate games if you feel that is necessary to pad your list…

  1. Wow, that is a long list! Nice job! Now Steve should make the pc list for funsies. It won’t be nearly as much work, probably only 19 or so games on it 😉

  2. There doesn’t seem to be as much heart and passion in the Xbox/PlayStation rivalry. It seems a bit forced in my opinion. And the two brands have only grown more similar as the generations have gone on – the genuine differences between 360 and PS3 and between XB1 and PS4 seem negligible and nitpicky. Nintendo and Sega were two completely different companies with completely different styles, games, and philosophies. It was a more interesting and genuine rivalry.

  3. Almost completely unrelated to the article above, but hasn’t the X-Box v PS rivalry outlasted the Sega v Nintendo? Maybe it doesn’t live in the popular memory of gamers in the same way?
I haven’t really cared about a console since the Saturn, but even in Europe or Japan, the Sega v Nintendo battle was played out over about 7 years (and two generations) whereas Microsoft and Sony have been battling since the turn of the century and the last 3 generations. Perhaps a topic for another day…
