The Mortal Monday Menagerie

With the milestone release of Mortal Kombat X this week, we thought we’d take a look back at our impressive (if we do say so ourselves) collection of MK content.  In fact, we’d even go so far as to say we have the internet’s largest and most diverse suite of MK articles outside of dedicated MK websites and communities.

Why all the MK love? Well beyond it just being one of gaming’s most popular and longest-running – but still relevant – franchises, few things are more genuinely “Chicago” than the Mortal Kombat series. You might not realize this if you haven’t been with us since the beginning, but we actually started out as a blog that was specifically dedicated to the Chicago gaming scene and the past and present games that were made here and the developers who have and continue to work here. That’s what the “Chi” in our name is – it isn’t the Greek letter, nor is it a reference to Chinese culture or mythology (and it certainly isn’t pronounced like the tea). And while we’ve since widened our focus, we’re still very much in tune with our beloved city and have the utmost love and respect for its many indispensable contributions to video game history. You also can’t be a website about Chicago and video games and not shine a massive spotlight on the Mortal Kombat series, as all of the core games have been developed here (up to and including Mortal Kombat X), its co-creators were born and raised here, and most of the people who actually portrayed the characters in the games were local martial artists and actors. It began as and remains a Chicago production through and through, and we couldn’t be more proud of its continued success.

How have we paid tribute to it? Through our “Mortal Monday” series, which has spawned a whopping 28 unique articles about the series. Everything from examining the lore to lists of our favorite (and least favorite) aspects of the series to trivia to meme round-ups to a look at all of the MK action figures and much, much more, we are pretty proud of the content we have available for MK fans to check out and enjoy. So we have decided to collect all of those articles right here into handy links for you to peruse (divided up into sections by the type of article it is), and we hope you get as big a kick out of looking through it all as we did making it. Long live Mortal Kombat!
