Top 5 Friday: Video Game Christmas Commercials – The Good, The Funny, and the Weird

5. Atari, 1983

“There was a huge crash…” In 1983, you bet there was. Still, points to Atari for soldiering on and trying to stay afloat for just one more Christmas with this delightfully cheesy spot.

4. Nintendo/Target, 1988

I’m not sure what’s stranger about this commercial: that Aretha Franklin was shilling NESes for Target, or that Target existed in 1988.

3. Cabella’s Big Game Hunter, 2012

Yeah yeah, roll your eyes…just watch it, it’s genuinely funny.

2. PlayStation, 1996 (Japan)

It’s a video game commercial from Japan, so of course it doesn’t make a damn bit of sense. And of course you’re about to watch it twice.

1. Nintendo/Pepsi, 1989

Full disclosure: This one got the top spot because I actually remembered this commercial, and it gave me all types of warm fuzzies. If you’re a gamer of a certain age, I dare you to watch this and not smile.

    1. There were a lot of pretty good non-English ones that I decided to rule out, but yeah, you don’t need to know how to speak ANY language to appreciate the absolutely lunacy of that commercial. The song was in English, and for me that was two thirds of what make the commercial so funny and insane.
