Insomniac Games spent 19 years developing games exclusively for Sony platforms until last year’s Fuse, their first-ever multiplatform game for both the PS3 and X360. This week, after two decades of supporting the PlayStation brand with some of its biggest and most important franchises – Sypro, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance – the company is bringing its latest release to only one platform: the Xbox One. Sunset Overdrive looks to be classic Insomniac, an action game full of crazy characters, a wacky story, and creatively hilarious weaponry.
Another reason that this is a big week for new-gen is Lords of the Fallen (PS4, XB1, and PC), as the developers of the game have stated that the it simply could not have been possible on last-gen consoles. The action/RPG certainly looks very pretty, but it remains to be seen if that’s the only reason that it couldn’t be tainted by having PS3 or X360 ports. It’s a given that new games will eventually stop coming to those platforms once enough time has passed, but if you’re going to claim that they are actually incapable of running your game, you’re going to need to back that up for reasons other than increased polygon counts and better textures.
There aren’t too many weeks that go by without a new artsy indie puzzle game, but The Unfinished Swan (PS4, Vita) is still a standout in a saturated (no pun intended) genre. You begin the game in a completely empty, white space, and the gameplay involves splattering paint to reveal the unseen objects and structures in the game world. Co-developer Armature Studio was formed by a few of the former creative heads of Nintendo developer Retro Studios (Metroid Prime, Donkey Kong Country Returns), so there are some talented industry vets driving this title. The Unfinished Swan will definitely be added to the other frequently cited games in the “this is why games are art” argument.
