New Game Releases for 10/13 – 10/19: A Spiritual Successor, a Pre-Sequel, and a Surprising Spin-Off

Hollywood likes to load up on scary movies to release in October to capitalize on Halloween fever, but the delay-prone video game industry doesn’t always seem to get that right. This year, however, we have several high-profile horror games coming out in October. Following the recently released Alien: Isolation comes The Evil Within (PS3, PS4, X360, XB1, PC), the first release from Shinji Mikami’s Tango Gameworks. The Resident Evil series has struggled both creatively and commercially since Mikami’s departure, so here’s hoping this is the true spiritual successor to the once great RE games that we’ve all been hoping for since RE4.

And you play as the bad guys. And it takes place on the moon. Between this and the Telltale Borderlands adventure game, the franchise is certainly taking a strange path since the last core title, and hopefully all of that is only serving to keep us busy while Gearbox is hard at work developing the full-on, next-gen Borderlands 3 that we all really want. Unless they are working on finishing another abandoned Duke Nukem game…

While I am a huge music game fan and I’m excited that Harmonix has some very exciting new music games in the pipeline, I definitely don’t have a problem with them stretching their creative wings a bit and trying some different things like this.

Also releasing this week:

F1 2014, a racing game for PS3, X360, and PC
F.E.A.R. Online, a free-to-play FPS for PC
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, an action game for PS4 and XB1
Poptropica: Forgotten Islands, an adventure game for 3DS
Hail to the King: Deathbat, an action game for iPhone and Android
