The Five Most Iconic Pieces of Game Music

5.  Final Fantasy Victory Fanfare

It’s short, but it’s iconic.  If you’ve been a gamer for any amount of time, chances are that you’ve played a Final Fantasy title, and if so, then you’ve heard that little ditty.  I’m not 100% sure, but I believe the music appears in every Final Fantasy title there is.  Even if it’s not in every one, it’s in enough that it’s a part of gaming culture as a whole.

4.  Halo Theme

Of all the music on this list the Halo theme is easily the most recent.  Given the success of the Halo franchise over the years though, you’d be hard pressed to find a gamer that couldn’t instantly recognize that low hum, the choral prelude, and that iconic opening riff.  In addition to being an iconic piece, it’s also an incredible composition in its own right.

3.  Metal Gear Solid Theme

Few game soundtracks convey the tone of the game as well as the Metal Gear Solid soundtrack, and the main theme in particular (the music that plays when you’re caught) is not only an absolutely fantastic piece, but it’s also a huge part of what many of us have loved about that series.  It’s hard to find a piece of music that conveys the sense of urgency that the Metal Gear Solid theme does.

2.  The Legend of Zelda Overworld Music

It doesn’t get much more iconic than the theme from the original The Legend of Zelda.  You really don’t even need to be a gamer to recognize that theme.  Simply being a parent of a child from the 80’s means that you’ve probably heard that music blaring through your house for hours on end.

1.  Super Mario Bros. Theme

I don’t think it comes as much of a surprise to anyone that the theme from Super Mario Bros. is number one.  As recognizable as the theme from The Legend of Zelda is, it’s not even comparable to the Super Mario Bros. theme.  In fact, that one piece of music is probably more recognizable than the other four combined.  A testament not only to the quality Mario music, but also Nintendo itself, Mario and his music are as well-known as any cultural icon there is.
